Myles Brame

I was born in Tacoma Washington in 1981.  My early childhood was fairly normal attending Grant Elementary and playing around the Oak Street block with the neighborhood gang.  In 1987 my parents, two sisters and I moved to Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island Washington.  It was there where I experienced the vast contrast between city and country life and started my path toward becoming the "nature boy" I am today.  I loved watching the bald eagles soar at Ebey's landing and studying the great diversity of marine life on the rocky coastal beaches.

Shortly after moving to the Island at age seven I discovered an orange tabby kitten in the bushes near our home.  I scooped him up and headed for the front door casting a quick "Can I keep him?" toward my mother which was a rhetorical question, as I quickly crossed the threshold into the house.  I named him Jinx and we quickly bonded over a strawberry frozen juice bar.  I have Jinx to thank for opening the door to a deeper understanding and bond with all animals that would eventually begin my path to where I am today.

I was happy on the Island we eventually moved to Coupeville, Whidbey Island Washington.  Life was good for me and Jinx, with plenty of woods and beaches to explore, but the revelry eventually ended when my family and I were forced to move back to the greater Tacoma area.  We moved near my grandparents in Gig Harbor, Washington.  Moving from an idyllic country setting to the suburbs was painful, and I quickly found my way to the bottom of the pecking order at school as a poor country boy.

My parents divorced when I was twelve and my paradigm shifted to depression and restless teen rebellion.  Having Jinx to care for and vice versa was invaluable and kept me from completely giving in to the negativity.  I had a very difficult adolescence and I took the first opportunity to strike out on my own.  At seventeen I took my first real job for Metro Parks Tacoma as a maintenance man.  From then I labored and toiled in the trades for nearly a decade and though I was thankful for the experience I was unsatisfied with my chosen path and felt unrewarded.  There was a void money could not fill.

In 2006 I married the love of my life Sarah Brame and we moved to Pullman Washington where she would attend Washington State University to finish her degree in soil science.  I applied for and received a job as the kennel manager at the Alpine Animal Hospital.  Thanks to Dr. Robinette for recognizing my potential as an animal care provider.  Working with animals professionally for the first time gave me a sense of accomplishment I had never felt and I was encouraged to use and enhance my natural abilities in animal language and behavior.

I believe I have found purpose in working with animals I continued my career as an animal care provider in Montana for the next several years, becoming a veterinary assistant and eventually spending a long difficult, but ultimately extremely rewarding year working for the Humane Society. We cared for over one hundred seized malamute sled dogs and their pups kenneled in a warehouse, eventually placing every dog in a forever home.  I would like to continue working with animals forever.

We moved to North Eastern Washington where again I began work as a tradesman for nearly two years before finding a savior in G.R.I.P.H.  Working for G.R.I.P.H has put me back on the right path, and given me an
opportunity to take focused and direct action toward achieving my goal of providing a voice and an opportunity for misunderstood wildlife like wolves to coexist on an ever diminishing landscape.  It also provides new opportunities to explore my abilities and purpose through working with equines, bovines, and all of the beautiful diversity of wildlife we share our region with.  All will always be an advocate of wildlife, nature, and freedom for all living things.
